One Bite Away

Before and after: Mint for More neighbor full face transformation after dental extractions and new dentures.

He lived with dental pain for years.

Not weeks. Not months. Years.

Cold drinks had to warm up before he could touch them. Certain foods were off the table entirely. Some nights the pain kept him awake. Some days it kept him home from work. And every time it flared, he did what a lot of neighbors in Northwest Arkansas do when dentistry isn’t within reach. He went to the emergency room.

In his own words:

“I went several times, and they really didn’t have anything that they could do. They just said, here’s something for the pain, hopefully it gets better, go see a dentist.”

That’s the loop. Pain. ER. Pills. Pain again. Nothing fixed.

The gap that swallowed him

He did try to go see a dentist. He went to a community clinic, the kind of place most people assume will catch anyone who can’t pay full price. It didn’t catch him.

“I was right under the threshold. It was like $80 a tooth to pull out.”

Eighty dollars a tooth sounds manageable until you count the teeth. For him, and for a lot of our neighbors, it wasn’t. Every other private office he called quoted numbers that were further out of reach. He was too high-income for the safety net and too low-income for private care. A dental no-man’s-land.

So he stopped asking.

“I would have just waited until all of my teeth fell out and just left it like that. I had no other options.”

What it costs to live like that

The pain is only part of it.

He stopped opening his mouth around his grandkids. Family members would nudge him about his teeth, and he’d hide away. He avoided jobs that put him in front of customers because he knew how he looked. His world got smaller without him deciding to shrink it.

That’s what dental disease does when it goes untreated. It isolates you. It closes doors. It’s not just a health problem. It’s a confidence problem, a work problem, a family problem.

How he got to Mint for More

Mint for More doesn’t take walk-ins. We never have. Free care at MFM runs through a network of 26 nonprofit partners in Northwest Arkansas. Organizations like Eagle Crest Recovery, Nicole’s House, and Micah 6.8, who know their communities and know who’s falling through the cracks.

One of those partners referred him.

A few weeks later, he sat down with our Executive Director after his extractions and new dentures were in. The change wasn’t subtle.

Before and after: close-up of teeth before extractions and after new dentures.

“Just self-confidence. I can already tell. I wanted to show my teeth to everybody like never before.”

He’s already thinking about work he couldn’t go after before.

“It’s definitely going to deliver more opportunity.”

And the physical relief (the quiet kind, the kind he’d forgotten was possible) is its own thing entirely:

“It feels good knowing I’m not one bite away, one mishap away, from having dental pain.”

What a free care model actually looks like up close

There’s a stereotype about free care. That it feels like a conveyor belt. That you trade dignity for cost. Our Executive Director asked him about it directly. His answer:

“I love it here. I refer you guys to everybody. Even if they have insurance, I’m like, come here. It’s professional, but not stuffy. More open feeling.”

That’s the bar. The care has to be the same quality a paying patient at Mint Dental Care would get, because it is the same doctor, the same team, the same materials, the same chair.

To the people who make this possible

When asked what he’d say if he met one of the donors who helps make MFM possible, he didn’t hesitate:

“I would say thank you. You may not see it every day, but you’ve saved so many people’s lives by doing one small act of kindness.”

The bigger picture

Since 2016, Mint for More has provided more than $3.5 million in free dental care to neighbors across Northwest Arkansas. In 2025, we hit the original goal we set for ourselves: one million dollars of free care in a single year, three years ahead of schedule.

What’s next is a standalone Mint for More clinic, open full-time, treating as many people in our community as we can reach who don’t otherwise have access to care. Every Thursday of free care we do now is one more argument for why that clinic needs to exist.

His story isn’t unusual. What’s unusual is that he found his way through.

How to help

  • Support the mission. Every dollar goes toward providing free care to neighbors who have nowhere else to turn. Donate here.
  • Partner with us. If your nonprofit serves people in Northwest Arkansas who lack access to a dental home, we’d love to talk. Reach out through mintformorenwa.org.
  • Refer a patient (partners only). Existing partner organizations can submit a referral through their usual contact.
