Madison’s Story

“Confidence is definitely winning.”

Before Mint for More, Madison had gone to the emergency room twice for dental pain. Both visits ended the same way: “might want to go to a dentist.” She didn’t have insurance. She still doesn’t. The one referral she chased ended with a shrug: not much we can do without insurance.

“Not only was my body rejecting my teeth,” she says, “but overall I was not a happy person.” She couldn’t eat right and was losing weight. She stayed home. She stopped talking to people. She stopped smiling.

It got desperate enough that she asked a family member about pulling her teeth the old-fashioned way. That was the plan, if nothing changed: pull them all, and just go without.

Then, at the food pantry at our partner Samaritan Community Center, someone told her about Mint for More.

She came in nervous. “I’ve been rejected by so many dentists,” she says. “I was waiting for it to happen. But I was very, very amazed and very thankful that I didn’t get rejected by y’all.”

“I wanted to stay home. Didn’t want to talk to people. Didn’t want to smile.”

The team walked her through every step. “They’re very welcoming, very hands-on. They never did anything without explaining it to me.” She wore healing dentures while her mouth recovered, and this week she received her complete set. “These are definitely a better fit. I feel happy. I can smile.”

And the timing matters. Madison just started a new job as a daycare teacher, and she’s expecting her second child, another girl. Ask her about her confidence now and she doesn’t hesitate: “Higher, definitely higher. Confidence is definitely winning.”

We asked what she’d say to the donors who made her care possible. She answered honestly: before this, the shame had carried her to some very dark places. She’s thankful, she says, to be here now, a mother with one daughter and another on the way.

“Thank you. Now I have a smile that I can go home and be happy.”

Madison, to the donors who make free care possible

Madison’s road to Mint for More started at a food pantry, because that’s how the model works: nonprofit partners like Samaritan Community Center know their neighbors, and they send them to us. Free dental care for neighbors who lack access to a dental home.
